When you're on the quest for better health, the last thing you need is a sugary derailment. So many of the foods we choose each day are loaded with hidden sugars that can undo all of our dieting and exercise efforts. No matter which diet plan you subscribe to, there is one universal rule: the less sugar the better.

The 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans suggests limiting added sugar intake to less than 10 percent of calories you ingest per day (this means 200 calories for those following a 2,000 calorie diet). We asked Rachel Swanson, MS, RD, LDN and Dr. Aviva Romm to unveil the secret sugar bombs that we need to watch out for. Here are 10 foods to keep on your radar.

For a long time, many believed that bran muffins were a nutritious and health-conscious breakfast choice. Unfortunately, this seemingly disciplined pick can actually have as much sugar as a donut or a serving of frosted cereal. Since high-sugar diets can raise heart disease risk in healthy people, it's all the more important to remain vigilant in reading nutritional labels. Instead of a muffin, opt for a savory breakfast like a vegetable omelet, or if you want something sweet you can make oatmeal at home and choose your own toppings.
