When you're on the quest for better health, the last thing you need is a sugary derailment. So many of the foods we choose each day are loaded with hidden sugars that can undo all of our dieting and exercise efforts. No matter which diet plan you subscribe to, there is one universal rule: the less sugar the better.


The 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans suggests limiting added sugar intake to less than 10 percent of calories you ingest per day (this means 200 calories for those following a 2,000 calorie diet). We asked Rachel Swanson, MS, RD, LDN and Dr. Aviva Romm to unveil the secret sugar bombs that we need to watch out for. Here are 10 foods to keep on your radar.

Canned Beans

Beans are a great source of vegetable protein. They're so versatile, you can use them in place of beef when making burgers and even make brownies with them as well. There’s just one problem: a lot of the canned varieties come with added sugars you don't need.

If you can, buy the beans raw and cook them yourself to make sure you know what you’re getting. When you’re in the store, always check the label to make sure they don't include sugars and while you’re at it, look for the low-sodium options too.
