When you're on the quest for better health, the last thing you need is a sugary derailment. So many of the foods we choose each day are loaded with hidden sugars that can undo all of our dieting and exercise efforts. No matter which diet plan you subscribe to, there is one universal rule: the less sugar the better.


The 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans suggests limiting added sugar intake to less than 10 percent of calories you ingest per day (this means 200 calories for those following a 2,000 calorie diet). We asked Rachel Swanson, MS, RD, LDN and Dr. Aviva Romm to unveil the secret sugar bombs that we need to watch out for. Here are 10 foods to keep on your radar.

Gummy Vitamins

While the amount of sugar found in gummy vitamins isn't nearly as bad as traditional sweets like candy or donuts, they may damage your oral health. The gummies tend to stick to teeth, creating a bacteria feeding ground thanks to the sugar content, and the citric acid goes to work by eating away at the enamel as well, which can lead to tooth decay and cavities. If you plan to continue taking gummy vitamins, Swanson recommends looking for brands that don't have potentially harmful dyes, such as Red 40, Yellow 5, and Yellow 6.
