When you're on the quest for better health, the last thing you need is a sugary derailment. So many of the foods we choose each day are loaded with hidden sugars that can undo all of our dieting and exercise efforts. No matter which diet plan you subscribe to, there is one universal rule: the less sugar the better.


The 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans suggests limiting added sugar intake to less than 10 percent of calories you ingest per day (this means 200 calories for those following a 2,000 calorie diet). We asked Rachel Swanson, MS, RD, LDN and Dr. Aviva Romm to unveil the secret sugar bombs that we need to watch out for. Here are 10 foods to keep on your radar.

Salad Dressing

You wouldn’t expect a healthy salad to be a major source of sugar, but unfortunately, your dressing may be adding more sweetness than you realize. Dr. Romm recommends inspecting the label when choosing your dressing at the grocery store, and if you eat out, always ask for dressing on the side. Try to stick to olive oil and vinegar and avoid creamier options, which are often loaded with calories and fat.
