When you're on the quest for better health, the last thing you need is a sugary derailment. So many of the foods we choose each day are loaded with hidden sugars that can undo all of our dieting and exercise efforts. No matter which diet plan you subscribe to, there is one universal rule: the less sugar the better.
The 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans suggests limiting added sugar intake to less than 10 percent of calories you ingest per day (this means 200 calories for those following a 2,000 calorie diet). We asked Rachel Swanson, MS, RD, LDN and Dr. Aviva Romm to unveil the secret sugar bombs that we need to watch out for. Here are 10 foods to keep on your radar.
Smoothies and Smoothie Bowls
While they may look incredibly photogenic and seem healthy in theory, smoothies and smoothie bowls can rack up a ton of sugar very quickly. Fruits are naturally high in sugar and when they are blended with fruit juices, honey, dried fruit, and granola it can create a major sugar bomb.
If you want to enjoy these treats in a healthier way, try swapping out some of the fruits in your smoothie with leafy vegetables, and avoid topping your smoothie bowl with sugary items, sticking to raw nuts and seeds instead.
