What to Expect

For the next seven days, you will have three teaspoons of apple cider vinegar, two teaspoons of coconut oil, and one cup of Greek yogurt. But unlike other cleanses that don't leave room for much else, Smith says you can also have plenty of fruits, vegetables, healthy fats, and lean proteins. Just make sure to avoid sugar, processed foods, and alcohol to really clean out your body and kickstart your wellness.

UCLA researchers put 95 overweight or obese folks ages 30–68 on a diet that provided 500 calories less than needed to maintain their resting metabolic rate for 12 weeks, then maintenance for another 12. The diet included 1.5 ounces of mixed nuts for half the group and pretzels for the others (both "snacks" delivered the same amount of calories).
