It’s that time of year – the time of lots of parties and the overeating that comes along with it. While the holidays can be an exciting time to see family and friends and have some fun, they can also cause a lot of stress for fear of gaining weight. Use these tips from Dr. Oz’s trusted experts to arm yourself with the hourly tools needed to make sure you get through each party this season without added guilt.

10 a.m.

Follow a healthy meal plan and eat a hearty breakfast. It is often thought that in order to maximize calories allowed at holiday parties it is best to starve oneself beforehand. This logic could not be further from the truth, cautions Feller. Skipping meals in order to give yourself more calories to play around with later is not a good idea because “we often severely underestimate the number of calories we consume at parties” says Feller, so we still end up overeating. Feller recommends trying out a breakfast salad in order to keep your blood sugar stable and pump your body with some extra nutrients in the morning.

Q: I end up overeating because it makes me feel better and I never really get full. I'd like to lose weight but this makes it hard. Any suggestions?

A: Being persistently hungry can cause big trouble. So can overeating for comfort/pleasure. These two behaviors, say researchers from Baylor University's Children's Nutrition Research Center, are controlled deep within your brain by serotonin-producing neurons, but operate separately from each other — one in the hypothalamus, the other in the midbrain. They both can, however, end up fueling poor nutritional choices and obesity.

Eating for Hunger

When hunger is your motive for eating, the question is: "Does your body know when you've had enough?" Well, if you are overweight, obese or have diabetes you may develop leptin resistance and your "I am full" hormone, leptin, can't do its job. The hormone's signal to your hypothalamus is dampened, and you keep eating.
