4 Steps for Finding Emotional Balance in the Pandemic

Let's face it: we're all a little stressed. The pandemic during this past year has dealt everyone a few setbacks, leaving us overwhelmed and a bit scattered. Dr. Jen Ashton, the chief medical correspondent for ABC, shared four steps you can take to restore a healthy emotional balance.

1. Recognize & Normalize

Everyone is feeling some type of stress due to the pandemic — it just depends on how much, how severe, how long? The first step is recognizing that we've all lost something, and it is normal to feel mental stress. And then normalize the fact that it is normal to respond to fear and uncertainty and loss with some kind of emotional response. It's OK not to be OK.


2. Ask for Help

Think of this like diabetes: If you had a medical condition, you would manage it. Mental issues are no different. Whether it's by app, telemedicine, support group or one-on-one appointment, get professional help.

3: Double-Down on the Wellness Trifecta

Get good sleep, clean food/nutrition, and get fresh air/exercise. These things are not just good for the body, they are good for the mind, brain and spirit.

4. Have a Good ASHTitude

Take the attitude of gratitude. While everyone has lost something or someone, most of us have something or someone to be thankful for as well. No matter how bad things feel, recognizing what is going well in our lives is KEY for mental wellness.

Will you ever feel comfortable in your own skin? That is, if you don't make an effort to protect it? Although 64% of adults do report wearing sunscreen when outside for prolonged periods of time, it turns out that only about 10% of people surveyed actually protect themselves daily, according to a recent review.

No matter what your skin tone is, unless you live in a cave with no sunlight, daily protection with either sunscreen, sunblock or protective clothing can not only protect you from developing sunburns (ouch!) but can significantly reduce your risk of developing skin cancer, particularly the deadliest type called melanoma. In addition, for those of you wanting to keep your youthful looks, daily sunscreen has been shown to reduce the development of wrinkles. A great teacher once told me that the best way to not have wrinkles is not to get them in the first place (think of how much money you can save on useless creams that claim to diminish wrinkles).
