Help Dr. Oz Teach Kids to Make Healthy Food Choices  — Here's How

Dr. Oz wants to make sure kids can be as healthy as they deserve to be. They need your help more than ever. You see, obesity among 2-19-year-olds has steadily increased since the early '60s to a rate of 19.3%. Why might this be happening? So many kids don't have health education in school, don't have access to healthy food in stores, and may live in communities that are inundated with ads for unhealthy foods. And, as we know, obesity puts these children at risk of type 2 diabetes, breathing problems, high blood pressure and, later on, heart disease.

Dr. Oz wants to put these kids on a healthier path — and he wants your help.

Dr. Oz founded the HealthCorps non-profit organization, which teaches kids what their bodies need and empowers them to prioritize their health for the future. Healthcorps sends instructors right to schools to create a wellness program for the kids: what foods are best to eat, how to get good exercise, and how their physical health is linked to their mental health.

"From what I learned from HealthCorps, I've changed what I eat and I've lost weight. And it's made me feel better," New Jersey high school student Katherine said of her experience.

Instructors host cooking classes, gardening clubs, activity sessions and stress management practices for the students.

"Gardening for me definitely has a meditative side to it. It helps me calm down my brain and my thinking," California student Rosa Marie Grimaldo said.

Not only does this give kids a clear path to be successful as adults, but it also helps build a healthy environment for everyone around them too — spreading the lessons they've learned through family members, friends and neighbors.

Q: I end up overeating because it makes me feel better and I never really get full. I'd like to lose weight but this makes it hard. Any suggestions?

A: Being persistently hungry can cause big trouble. So can overeating for comfort/pleasure. These two behaviors, say researchers from Baylor University's Children's Nutrition Research Center, are controlled deep within your brain by serotonin-producing neurons, but operate separately from each other — one in the hypothalamus, the other in the midbrain. They both can, however, end up fueling poor nutritional choices and obesity.

Eating for Hunger

When hunger is your motive for eating, the question is: "Does your body know when you've had enough?" Well, if you are overweight, obese or have diabetes you may develop leptin resistance and your "I am full" hormone, leptin, can't do its job. The hormone's signal to your hypothalamus is dampened, and you keep eating.
