Kimberly-Clark Flushable Wipes Statement

Kimberly-Clark responds to The Dr. Oz Show's segment on flushable wipes.

Kimberly-Clark Flushable Wipes Statement
Consumers want a flushable wipe that helps them feel cleaner and fresher than toilet paper alone. Kimberly-Clark and its brands, including Cottonelle and Scott, provide our consumers flushable wipes that meet these needs in a responsible way.
Field research carried out jointly by wastewater agencies and wipes manufacturers shows that about 90% of the material found in sewers is “non-flushable” content like paper towels, baby wipes, feminine hygiene products and much more. It’s important for consumers to read the labels on wipes products before they flush --- our wipes are clearly labeled. Don’t flush anything that’s not clearly marked as safe for flushing.
All Kimberly-Clark products that are labeled as “safe to flush” meet or exceed the current industry guidelines for assessing the flushability of these products. You can watch videos of these tests in our flushability lab here, including an easy, informal jar test that you can do on your own at work or at home to see for yourself that these wipes quickly lose strength in water. Our flushable cleansing cloths use a patented technology that makes them strong in the package and during wiping, then allows them to break up after flushing to clear properly maintained toilets, drainlines, sewers, pumps, septic and municipal treatment systems.
Our commitment is that if our wipes say they are flushable, then we stand behind that. As responsible stewards of clean water and the environment, we are committed to helping people understand what’s safe to flush and what’s not. We’ll continue working closely with industry groups, local governments and local utilities to make sure the most accurate information is available.
