CLIA has no firsthand knowledge of the investigations by the authorities or the cruise line. However, we understand the incident was thoroughly investigated by the FBI which neither determined there was foul play nor was critical of the cruise line’s handling of the matter. The incident was also investigated by authorities abroad. Incidents of a passenger going overboard are extremely rare and are always investigated thoroughly.
Under the Cruise Vessel Security and Safety Act of 2010 (CVSSA), all CLIA Cruise Line Members must have either video cameras to capture incidents of man overboard or man overboard detection systems. We have seen no evidence that CLIA members are not in compliance with the CVSSA, which is regulated and enforced by the U.S. Coast Guard.
