USDA Statement About Chicken from China
As we have stated in regards to our determination for processed poultry:
The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has announced that China is eligible to export processed, cooked chicken to the United States.The United States is not importing any raw chicken from China.FSIS has determined that China’s poultry processing inspection system is equivalent to that of the United States, and cooked chicken imported from China would be processed under equivalent conditions as in the United States.
As always, FSIS is fully committed to protecting the nation’s food supply and if China begins exporting processed chicken products to the United States, all food safety steps will be taken as if the products were processed in the United States.
Our audit of China’s system for slaughtered poultry is ongoing so China is not eligible to send raw poultry to the U.S. On November 10th, we released the following statement:
Correcting the Record
WASHINGTON, Nov. 10, 2013 - The USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) released the following statement today following a press release from Senator Chuck Schumer's office regarding equivalency for China's poultry slaughter system.
"USDA has not found China's poultry slaughter system to be equivalent, and therefore poultry slaughtered in China is not allowed to be imported to the United States. The U.S. food supply is among the safest in the world, and the USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service is dedicated to maintaining that status."
FSIS is a regulatory agency and is bound by legal obligation to review requests from foreign countries that want to export product to the United States.
In December 2010, China requested FSIS to evaluate its poultry slaughter system, and FSIS was legally obligated to move forward with an audit.FSIS has not released the results of this audit as it has not been finalized. If the audit reveals food safety issues with China's poultry slaughter system, then China will be required to take corrective actions and then be audited again in order for the process to continue.
