Pre-Cut Melon Causing Salmonella Outbreak

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a warning about pre-cut melon that has caused at least 60 people to get sick. According to the CDC, the melon contained salmonella. While only people in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and Missouri have reported cases of the food-borne illness, the melon was allegedly also sold in Georgia, Kentucky, and North Carolina at stores such as Trader Joe's, Walmart, Walgreens, and Costco, among others

Symptoms of salmonella include, but are not limited to: fever, stomach cramps, and diarrhea. These symptoms can last for several days and, in extreme cases, could cause severe illness, hospitalization, and death. If you experience these extreme symptoms, you should make an appointment with your doctor. Additionally, if you bought pre-cut melon -- including fruit salads that contain melon -- from any of these stores, the CDC advises you throw it away.
