Why? Cans that store food often contain a chemical called bisphenol A (BPA), which is used to prevent metal from corroding. Lab and animal studies suggest that BPA interferes with the function of hormones in the body, which can significantly disrupt reproductive function and may even increase the likelihood of certain types of cancer. In addition, high urinary BPA concentrations have been associated with cardiovascular disease and diabetes. In one study, volunteers who consumed a serving of canned soup once a day for five days experienced a greater than 1,000% increase in urinary BPA concentration compared to a group that drank fresh soup.
