Joel McHale’s Lab Book

When Doctor Oz stopped by The Soup, comedian Joel McHale revealed his scientific side with an eye-catching trick involving dancing raisins. Learn how Joel made the tiny fruits dance and learn the science behind the experiment. Then try it out for yourself using items from your own kitchen!

How did Joel make the raisins twist and shout?

When Joel combined vinegar and baking soda in water, he created carbonic acid, which releases bubbles of carbon dioxide. These bubbles stick to the skin of the raisins and lift them up – almost like mini life vests. When the bubbles pop, the raisins fall back down, causing them to look like they’re dancing.
