The heart is perhaps the body’s most beautiful muscle. Roughly the size of a clenched fist, this amazing machine beats approximately 100,000 times in a day and about 35 million times in a year. During an average lifetime, the human heart will beat more than 2.5 billion times. This powerful pump circulates oxygen and nutrient-rich blood to every cell in the human body. Have a heart and take good care of your ticker. Follow these heart-healthy steps to live better and longer.

Eat to Heart Health

Research shows that people who live in Mediterranean countries are 20% less prone to heart disease. Even if you don’t live in the Mediterranean, you can eat like you do. Choose mainly plant-based foods like fresh fruits, vegetables, pasta, beans and nuts, and eat less red meat. Avoid sodium-laden processed groceries and eat foods that are fresh and in season. Make cholesterol-reducing olive oil your main source of fat and eat fish twice a week. Lastly, enjoy heart-healthy red wine in moderation – that translates as 1 glass for women or 2 for men a day.
