Jumpstart Your Heart Action Plan

The heart is perhaps the body’s most beautiful muscle. Roughly the size of a clenched fist, this amazing machine beats approximately 100,000 times in a day and about 35 million times in a year. During an average lifetime, the human heart will beat more than 2.5 billion times. This powerful pump circulates oxygen and nutrient-rich blood to every cell in the human body. Have a heart and take good care of your ticker. Follow these heart-healthy steps to live better and longer.

Tend to Your Teeth

Studies show that having gingivitis (gum disease) can quadruple your risk of stroke and raise your risk of a heart attack up to 12 times. Wage war on bacteria-ridden plaque, by practicing good oral hygiene. Brush your teeth at least twice a day for 2 minutes at a time; floss once a day; and keep regular dental appointments (usually twice a year for professional cleanings). One last tip: Chew sugarless gum. It increases the saliva flow which helps to prevent plaque buildup.
