Be a Smart Patient

Every day, premature deaths occur that could have been avoided by early detection. Be a smart patient and see your doctors regularly. Get an annual physical so your doctor can check your vitals, run routine tests and do blood work. This way, you’ll be able to stay on top of vital health numbers, including cholesterol and blood pressure (BP), two vital numbers regarding cardiovascular health.

\r\nBoth high BP and high cholesterol are regarded as silent killers since they do not manifest symptoms. In fact, only 1 in 3 people with high BP know they have it, and only 1 in 3 people with high cholesterol are being treated for it. \r\n

\r\nEvery 6 months, have a dental check up and cleaning to help prevent gum disease. Schedule an appointment with your eye doctor at least every 2 years. By age 50, you need to have a colonoscopy (sometimes earlier if you have a family history of colon cancer). Once sexually active, women need to see a gynecologist for regular Pap tests. Females over 40 should have annual mammograms to screen for breast cancer. In sum, practicing prevention can dramatically increase the odds for a longer, healthier life.
