Cherish Your Heart

One of the best ways to cherish your heart is to keep on top of your blood pressure and cholesterol numbers. An easy way to do this is by having them tested at least once a year during your general physical. Ideal blood pressure is less than 120/80 mm Hg. In general, you want to keep your LDL cholesterol levels low, between 50-190 mg/dL, and your HDL cholesterol levels as high as possible, 30-70 mg/dL in men and 30-90 mg/dL in women. Left untreated, cholesterol can contribute to build up of the arteries, which can cause a heart attack or stroke. If you have high cholesterol that can’t be managed by diet and exercise alone, your doctor may recommend you take cholesterol-lowering prescription medication. To protect your heart, practice cardiovascular exercise at least three times a week for 30-minute intervals and eat mainly a plant-based diet low in saturated fat.
