So many people on social media have been steeping romaine lettuce in hot water. Some claim drinking the concoction has helped them fall asleep even decreased their insomnia. So Dr. Oz put it to the test.
DR. OZ'S VERDICT
After trying plain water with romaine lettuce, Dr. Oz felt it tasted a little... green. So he recommends using it with hot chamomile or peppermint tea for some extra flavor.
Now, what about its sleep benefits? Dr. Oz says that wild lettuce extracts were actually used as a natural sedative in folk medicine long ago. But when it comes to conventional lettuce today, boiling a few leaves isn't likely to release enough extract to have an effect on you — if there was a sedative component.
But if you're desperate for a snooze, Dr. Oz says, it doesn't hurt to give this new drink a try!
